Fatemeh Barzkar (b. 1996, Tehran) is a sound artist based in Mainz, Germany. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in Handicrafts from the University of Tehran in 2019 and studying classical piano, photography, and painting, she turned to sound art as a way of bringing together her diverse artistic interests. Alongside teaching piano since 2021, she has developed an interdisciplinary practice centered on sound, listening, and perception. She has been studying Sound Art Composition at Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz since 2024.

Barzkar’s early works approached listening as a mental act, creating situations in which audiences were invited to reconstruct absent, hidden, or incomplete elements through memory, imagination, and association. A recurring strategy in these projects was the withholding of sonic information through masking, displacement, or partial access. In recent years, her practice has gradually shifted toward active listening and site-responsive encounters, informed by her travels and ongoing collection of field recordings across Europe. While her focus has expanded from the mental reconstruction of sound to listening as a bodily and spatial experience, the use of concealment remains central. In works such as Where is the Potter? Where the Buyer? Where the Seller?, white noise partially masks the surrounding environment, transforming listening into a process of searching, struggling and discovering.
